Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is a spin-off game from the Spyro series and the first game in the new Skylanders series which will be published by Activision worldwide, but by Square Enix in Japan. This newest offering in the series is actually a fusion of video game and a set of collectible action figures who interface with the game by sitting upon the special "portal interface" which is actually a sensor mat that plugs into your console.
The release schedule is almost as complicated as the development structure; in Australia the Windows PC version is scheduled for an October 12, 2011 release, and October 13, 2011 for the consoles, with Europe getting their releases on October 14, 2011, and North America getting the games on October 16, 2011. Square Enix will publish the game for the Japanese markets on a TBA date that will likely be set for late 2011 or early 2012.
Spyro's Adventure has a rather complicated lineage in that the overall development and control of the project is vested with the studio Toys for Bob, who is developing the Wii version of the game while overseeing the development of the other platform versions, which have been contacted out to other studios. The Windows PC, Xbox 360 and PS3 versions are being developed by veteran Taiwanese game studio XPEC Entertainment, while game studio Vicarious Visions is developing the Nintendo 3DS version, which has a very different focus than the other versions, being more platformer-centric and collection-oriented.
Veteran gamers will be very familiar with the character of Spyro and the three distinct game series -- plus the spin-offs -- which got its start in 1998 with the release of the PlayStation exclusive Spyro the Dragon, making this the 14th title in the Spyro lines if you count the spin-offs, or the 10th if you do not count the spin-offs. Technically we should count the spin-offs because this is itself a spin-off for a new series -- Skylanders -- and so we will!
The games in the different series ranged from Action-Adventure to pure platformers with a few that were mixtures of the two genres, each relating the adventures of Spyro, a small purple dragon, who eventually gathers a following of mates of various warm and fuzzy species and ranks of enemies that include dinosaurs, a Sorceress, evil dragons, an ape king, and others.
In Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, gamers take on the role of the powerful Portal Master, who controls more than 32 characters who are represented by real toy action figures as well as characters in the game -- among which is our favorite fire-breathing dragon, Spyro!
