Introduction

Bastion is a beautifully executed Action/RPG game that demonstrates how much that a willing developer can accomplish when they invest time and effort. What they ended up with here is a game that is so stunning you can hardly believe it is a game.

Bastion is a narrative driven adventure that features an innovative take on an old genre. You play the game as the protagonist ‘The Kid’ and as your adventure starts, you have no notion of where you are, or what threats await.

You awake with no idea of how you got where you are, who you are, or what you are supposed to be doing, but soon enough things start making sense as you begin to build security into your world in the form of your Bastion.

A Bastion is by definition a projecting work in a fortification designed to permit fire to the flanks along the face of the wall -- but in the case of Bastion the game, it is simply a defensible base from which you build.

The Bastion serves as the hub around which the Kid proceeds to craft and build as the game progresses, which he accomplishes through collected items and core resources and then returning them to the Bastion to expand its land. In these new areas buildings obtained in the different levels are constructed which expand the available activities in the game.

Acquiring your weapons and kit as pick-ups, your adventure through Bastion is related to you through the words of the narrator, who seems to know an awful lot about you and your character.

The visual style of the game has very obvious roots in anime, and that largely explains why it has such a stunning look and feel to it.

"Our goal with Bastion is to hit players' emotional chords in unexpected ways, in addition to delivering highly responsive gameplay that rewards finesse and experimentation," says Greg Kasavin, Supergiant Games' Creative Director. "We're pushing to make it so that players become absorbed in the game's distinctive setting and narrative tone from the first moments."

The goal of the game is to construct a safe haven in the wake of the Calamity, a cataclysmic event that shattered the world into a series of floating islands. As you journey into the wild unknown in search of survivors and supplies, you will confront strange beasts, forge an array of customizable weapons, and gain new powers from specially-brewed spirits. That is the game in a nutshell.
