Background The original game that established the series -- Portal -- is a single-player puzzle-platformer developed by Valve Corporation that was released as part of The Orange Box bundle for Microsoft Windows and Xbox 360 on October 9, 2007, and eventually becoming so popular that it was released as a standalone retail product on April 9, 2008. While Portal is an original title developed by Valve, it is in fact the spiritual successor of a freeware game called Narbacular Drop that was created by students at DigiPen Institute of Technology in 2005 as a group project, with its success -- it won numerous awards -- eventually leading to the original Narbacular Drop team being employed by Valve.
