Wargaming.net today introduced ground-attack planes to its flight combat MMO World of Warplanes, which is currently in its Alpha Test stage and is certain to enthrall both war gaming fans and MMO fans alike, especially thanks to these heavily-armed vintage warbirds that present such a massive threat as a class that was designed to effectively wipe out ground targets.

Several legendary names stand out in the class of ground-attack planes, including the classic Russian birds the Il-2, Il-10, and the highly progressive jet-powered Il-40 "sturmoviks," which is presented in the Soviet tech tree, and will expand into models from other nations as World of Warplanes gets close to launch later this year.

Ground-attack aircraft are most famous for deadly strafing runs, dive bombing and destructive missile attacks, while their armor provides high survivability and combat effectiveness. An excellent example of this sort of plane is the Republic A-10 Warthog anti-tank/anti-armor and ground attack plane that is literally a flying armor-plated bathtub with a plane built around it, and an incredible series of weapon-mounts and cannon built onto that!

"This is the best example of what a flying tank would be like," says World of Warplanes Project Manager Alex Zezulin.

"Ground-attack planes are heavy, slow-paced, close to invulnerable machines that might have the most important objective in combat: to eliminate any ground-based resistance and ensure the safety of their lighter allies."

World of Warplanes is the flight combat MMO action game set in the Golden Age of military aviation, giving gamers the opportunity to strap on full-scale replicas of some of the most effective tools of war ever created, with a selection of planes spanning the iconic war eras from the 1930's forward, in a game that continues the armored warfare theme established by the now-celebrated title World of Tanks from the same publisher and developer that has demonstrated to hundreds of thousands of gamers the world over that often it is not just how you fight, but who you fight with that makes all the difference.
