GameStop PowerUp Rewards Points Expire Notice an Error

If you are a customer of videogame retailer GameStop -- and a member of its PowerUp Rewards loyalty program -- you may be among the thousands of people all over the world who received an email notification that their reward points held on account in the loyalty program are about to expire. The good news is that the email notification was a mistake -- your points are safe, and you do not need to visit their website and redeem them as you will not be losing them after all.
Out of the blue customers all over the world received the following email notice warning them that the points in their account were about to expire and telling them how to use them before that happened:

Your points are about to expire, and you only have until Thursday, January 26, to save them. Since they are the only way to get all the cool stuff in the PowerUp Rewards catalog, you need make sure they don't disappear. It's easy to keep those points safe for another year.

Last night the massive game retailer issued the following email to customers to apologize for the error:
Dear (Customer Name)
Due to a recent error, you may have received an email that said your points are about to expire. Rest assured, your points are safe and sound and there is nothing to worry about.
Please accept our deepest apologies.
