View Full Version : Discussion on keyboards in black metal
I seen a similar topic posted at another board and decided i'd post a similar topic here.
Do you think keyboards ruin black metal:
I think some bands such as Dimmu Borgir overuse them a bit, but i think keyboards fit in great with some bands such as Emperor who use them to great effect but don't use them to often.
Your opinions on this?

Now now Ben, I thought the music forum was about spreading the word of different types of music, not slagging it off.

Do you want the music forum to remain a sub forum? Or do you want ti back in its rightful main board spot?

Keyboards can be used too much sometimes (Cradle of Filth albums, Dimmu Borgir albums etc) but some keyboard tracks add an extra dimension of atmosphere to the whole album. Burzum for instance, 25+ minute keybaord track but its done really well (in my opinion anyway) and adds an extra dimension to the album Hvis Lyset tar Oss (or however its spelt :) )

What i hate is how people regard later Burzum albums as crap. I bought the album you mentioned the other week, and although its all synth music, i found it be quite good.
EDIT: although i don't agree with the de-motion of Ben and Aaron, its good to see you back as mod Satyr:)

Edited by Satyr Did you check the link? I linked a metalish band that you might be interested in. I was hoping people would check them out. When I 'slag off' music, you shouldn't take me seriously.

Ok dude, I'm a bit tired right now, but I'll mind that from now on ;)
I'm just away to check the link. I heard you reccommend Himsa a while back and I meant to have a looksie but I totally forgot about it (alcohol, women, that sort of thing you know)
I hope you'll keep posting here Pikey

Although not black metal, MortIIs's early albums have excellent keyboard work in them.
Satyr, if you like songs like the one you mentioned above, check out Fodt Til Å Herske by Mortiis. Two 25 minute long, peaceful keyboard-ish tracks. Only £7.71 - free delivery! (http://www.earacheshop.com/store/product120.html)
I think it was the one you mentioned "Hvis Lyset tar Oss"
I actually bought the album thinking it was one of Burzum's eariler albums, but it was all the synth stuff though (although which i still like), i was still glad to find another Burzum album though, because i've only ever found 2 down my local hmv.
An e-card should come up when you press that link which plays a song from their new album. Their new stuff ('Courting tragedy and disaster') is pretty much all metal, whereas before they were more hardcore/metal. I don't know their old stuff, though.

Ahhh Mortiis, good bassist from what I can remember for Emperor in their early days. I'll check that out Addy, cheers. \m/

i love keyboards in music that normally doesnt have it, although i cant say i'm too keen on the metal stuff.
but keyboards can totally make or break a band, definitely.
I love the keyboards in Blood Brothers' 'Every breath is a bomb'. Or 'Cecila and the Silouhette Saloon'. Or just in their songs.

Keyboards are only good in black metal if they used correctly
The Tolkien inspired band Summoning makes great use of keyboards, conjuring up some good imagery and overall it compliments the music. Whilst the freak-show of Abruptum use a keyboard (acting as a piano) to add some creepiness to their music. Burzum made some good use of keyboards in the latter albums and Satyricon are also known for having some unusual but exciting synth parts.
Bands that use keyboards for the reaon of....using keyboards really shouldnt be using them at all. It has to fit the music.
